Hurawalhi is adults-only, set on a private island in the Lhaviyani Atoll. Because of that, it draws couples who want world-class snorkeling and scuba diving alongside genuine five-star service.
The standout here is the 5.8 Undersea Restaurant, named for its depth of 5.8 meters below the surface. You dine inside a glass dome with open ocean on all sides. Additionally, guided sailing excursions across the atoll are worth booking in advance.
Kudadoo Maldives Private Island
Fifteen overwater residences, 24/7 private butlers, and the only fully solar-powered island in the Maldives. In short, Kudadoo is built around the idea that nothing should require effort on your part.
The spa is what sets it apart. Treatments include a Himalayan salt chamber, Japanese hara bodywork, and sound therapy using Tibetan singing bowls. Meanwhile, the curated cellar holds 30-plus cheeses and 150-plus premium wines, so it becomes a full evening on its own.
Six Senses Laamu
Set on a remote coral atoll, Six Senses Laamu feels genuinely connected to where it is. Local materials, cultural programming, and an experience that doesn’t feel interchangeable with other properties. In fact, it’s the only resort in the Laamu Atoll.
The Sunset Laamu Water Villas face west from the end of the jetty, so they deliver exactly what the name promises. Activities range from turtle hatchings between May and August to snorkeling, private stargazing screenings, and dolphin sunset cruises. As a result, it’s a strong fit for couples who want variety rather than stillness.
Niva Velassaru Maldives
Formerly Velassaru Maldives, this property now operates as Niva Velassaru. It sits about 25 minutes by speedboat from Malé, so no seaplane is required. That simplicity is genuinely valuable on travel days, especially if you’re landing late.
Overwater villas, beachfront retreats, and garden hideaways give you flexibility. In addition, five restaurants, lagoon catamaran rides, moonlit snorkeling, and private barre classes round out the calendar without overwhelming it.
The St. Regis Maldives Vommuli Resort
The St. Regis Vommuli is architecturally striking. The bar is shaped like a whale shark, and the design is built around the marine environment rather than ignoring it. There are 77 villas in total, 33 on land and 44 overwater.
Additionally, the resort has one of the largest hydrotherapy pools in the Maldives. It also keeps an on-staff marine biologist who oversees a coral recovery program guests can take part in. In short, this is elevated service with genuine substance behind it.
What to Do Beyond the Resort
Visit a Local Island
A day trip to an inhabited island gives you a completely different perspective on the country. Three are worth considering:

Around 2,500 coral reefs surround the islands. Because of active conservation efforts, they’re in better shape than they’ve been in decades. Most resorts have certified in-house dive instructors, so no pre-trip logistics are required. Typical sightings include sea turtles, stingrays, whale sharks, and schools of reef fish.
Experience Something Underwater
A few standouts are worth knowing about:
- Huvafen Fushi. Home to the world’s only underwater spa, where a couples massage comes with open-ocean views through floor-to-ceiling glass.
- The Muraka at Conrad Maldives. A two-level residence whose main bedroom sits below sea level beneath a 180-degree glass dome.
