On the Cancun coast, the ocean faces east and the sunset happens somewhere behind the buffet. In Puerto Vallarta, your ceremony can end with the sky going gold and pink over the Pacific while your photographer earns their fee. If a sunset-over-the-ocean wedding is the picture in your head, this is the coast where it’s real.
And that’s just the opener. PV gives you the Sierra Madre mountains tumbling into Banderas Bay, a genuine town with cobblestone streets and a boardwalk worth strolling, and a restaurant scene your guests can actually go out into. Where Cancun was purpose-built for tourism, Puerto Vallarta was a fishing town first, and it still feels like Mexico. That’s the charm, and it photographs like a dream.
One Bay, Four Zones
Banderas Bay is huge (it spans two states), and where you land on it, shapes your whole wedding. From town outward:
- Downtown & the Romantic Zone: the Malecón boardwalk, cobblestones, galleries, and dining. The heart of PV’s character, and walkable from a couple of the resorts below.
- The Hotel & Marina Zone: just north of downtown, close to the airport, where several full-service resorts cluster. Town is minutes away.
- Nuevo Vallarta & Riviera Nayarit: across the state line, quieter and more polished, with long beaches and big resort estates.
- Bucerías to Punta Mita: the bay’s northern arc, where the coastline turns hilly and dramatic and the vibe goes surf-chic. The farthest from town and the closest to secluded.
When to Get Married in Puerto Vallarta
- November through May is the dry season, and it’s glorious: warm days, cool evenings, and almost no rain for months at a stretch. Bonus for winter dates: humpback whales fill Banderas Bay from mid-December through March. A whale-watching morning is the kind of guest activity people talk about for years, and it happens to overlap with prime wedding season.
- June through mid-October is the rainy season, but Pacific rain plays differently than Caribbean rain. It tends to arrive in dramatic bursts, often in the evening, with hot sunny days in between. Summer weddings here are very doable with a smart venue plan and travel insurance, and the savings are real. I’ll walk you through the trade-offs honestly before you pick a date.
And the question every couple researching Mexico eventually asks: seaweed? Not here. Sargassum is a Caribbean situation. The Pacific side doesn’t get it, which means one less thing to plan around.
Can You Legally Get Married in Puerto Vallarta?
Yes. A civil ceremony with a Mexican Civil Registry judge is legally binding and recognized in the U.S., with the usual homework: documents, witnesses, a local health screening, and a few extra days in-country. No. Sargassum is a Caribbean coast issue; the Pacific side doesn’t see it. PV’s planning considerations are different: rainy season timing and venue backup plans, which are much easier problems to solve.
Can we host wedding events in town, not just at the resort?
